Dr. Carey’s Baby Care: First Year Baby Care Guide Review and Giveaway

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I am very fortunate to have to received Dr. Carey’s Baby Care: First Year Baby Care Guide in the mail today for review. Perfect timing too since my 7 month old has his very first fever.

Dr. Carey’s Baby Care: First Year Baby Care Guide is a book written by Dr. Carey, a paediatrician in California. This book is great for parents with little ones. It is filled with answers to parents most common questions during their child’s first year of life.
This 80-page guide is divided into 8 helpful sections:
  1. Development
  2. Rashes, Rashes, Rashes
  3. Baby Care That Nobody Talks About
  4. Those Messy Diapers
  5. Minor Medical Problems
  6. The Sick Baby
  7. Since You Asked
  8. My Baby’s Milestones
Within each chapter, you will find the major answers to questions commonly asked to paediatricians in a clear and simple form with tons of pictures. Some topics covered include: reflexes, baby acne, umbilical cord care, meconium, thrush, the common cold, teething and many more.
As a new mom I constantly have a million questions that I need to find answers to. Sometimes it’s hard to get all of the answers right away that can cause me to worry needlessly. I sometimes call or email by son’s paediatrician or naturopath but I can’t always get a hold of them as soon as I would like. With this guide, many of the answers that I had as a new mom are right in this book. My son’s fever is a perfect example of this. When I first noticed that my son had a fever I immediately called Telehealth. They advised me to book an appointment with my family doctor. I immediately called my family doctor and was only able to get an appointment for the following day in the afternoon. In the meantime, I decided to call my naturopath who did not answer her phone. Luckily this guide was in the mail and surprisingly had a fever section. The guide suggested I give my son a lukewarm sponge bath to help him feel cooler. The guide also gave me a ton of things to watch out for that deserve prompt medical attention.

Wouldn’t you like to have some of your many answers right at your fingertips too? Well, now you can since Dr. Carey is generously offering one lucky reader their very own copy of Dr. Carey’s Baby Care: First Year Baby Care Guide.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Guest Post: Having a baby rocked my world but not in the dreamy fall in love kind of way at first

Guest Post: Written By Sarah from http://cookiesmokebreak.wordpress.com/
We had a rough start her and me. I was induced on my due date due to a two vessel umbilical cord and let's just say some integral parts of me were not even aware I was pregnant. So 55 hours later my labour was declared "failure to progress" and my daughter was born via a c section at one in the morning. My husband held her first and he introduced us. I was so preoccupied with being awake during a surgery and so high on morphine that the moment wasn't as special as I would have liked it to be. Then after some time we went back to our room and that was it, we had a baby to take care of.
We were both exhausted after being up for a few days and experiencing a roller coaster of emotions of the last little while. Also I was still super high and so, so itchy (a side effect of the morphine). We got through it but it was far from magical. She came home and I thought, “Ok here we go, now I'll feel better,” but I didn't. I was struggling with breast feeding and I was combative with everyone. In hindsight I think I was expecting a little sympathy for what I'd been through, like "Oh you poor thing, here let me just take this needy baby away, you need to rest."
I recently had my gallbladder out and was shocked at the doctor's orders to take it easy for two weeks and how much people wanted to help me. I have major abdominal surgery like a c section and they handed me an infant needing 24 hour care and say, "Ok, take care – congratulations!" Some mothers are born alongside their babies and some like me are dragged into motherhood kicking and screaming.
I was shocked at how much my world changed and how much was expected of me. I like being good at things and I felt like a duck out of water. After a few days we went to the breast feeding clinic and things were serious, she was not getting enough food and the nurse said "It's a good thing you came in, if you had waited another day you probably would have had trouble waking her up.” That was a dark day. A friend came over and I was practically hysterical. I was sure I had made a huge mistake and all signs were pointing to me not being meant to be a mother. She and my husband talked me off the cliff and I kept plugging away, but it was hard.
Then one night I was holding her and looking at her and something clicked. It wasn't about me anymore (ok well not just me, anyway) it was about her. I had to get a grip for her, I had to grow some confidence and stop taking everyone's advice as criticism, for her. She needed me to be better so I could take the best care of her. I told my husband to get the camera so I could have a picture of that moment. That's when I became a mom.

At wasn't all awesome and magical from that moment on, but I kept getting pushed to my max and then discovering I had more in me to give.  My soul needed time to grow and stretch in order to learn to be selfless and get that this little baby needed me and only me and when I dropped everything else and stopped resenting the job and embraced motherhood I felt the all love that was missing.

Buttons Diapers Review

When my husband and I first bought and started using cloth diapers with our son we raved to everyone about how amazing cloth diapering is. We were so excited to start cloth diapering that we bought 24 of one brand from a baby show before baby arrived. Our excitement didn’t last too long though. It didn’t take long for us to start feeling very frustrated and annoyed with diaper leaks everywhere.

I quickly contacted the cloth diaper company and explained the leaking situation to them and they simply told me that it was my HE machine causing the leaking and not the diaper itself. After trying various different wash routines my husband and I ended up buying a few more diapers from other companies to test out and believe it or not these brands did not leak. Although, we love the new brands they are very costly. We cannot justify buying a whole new supply of diapers that are going to break the bank – again. So our search continues…

Recently, I came across a new budget friendly diaper brand, Buttons Diapers. The best thing about my awesome find was that Buttons Diapers was kind enough to give me a cloth diaper to test out on my little one in exchange for my constructive feedback.

I was extremely excited to receive this diaper in the mail that I quickly opened the package, prepped the diaper and put it on my little one as quick as possible. I decided to test the diaper out first at night along with the nighttime doubler insert that was sent.

Diaper Cover - Sweet Pea

Double - Gussets
Cute Little Button Design

After 10 hours of sleeping my son woke up soaked. Yup, completely soaked! I was so sure that for once he was going to wake up dry. I began to question why he had leaked through the diaper. Did I use the right insert? Did I prep the inserts properly? Was it because the large insert was too big and sticking out of the diaper? I quickly re-washed the insert and diaper and thought I’d test out the small daytime insert. I still had hope for this diaper. I really wanted this diaper to work. I love the no stuff easy strap and go approach. The insert just snaps right onto the cover. Did I mention how soft these inserts are? I wish they made adult underwear this soft.

As my son was playing around in his new Buttons Diaper I sat down to think about how I was going to write a review on a diaper that possibly didn’t work for me. I decided to double check the website again because I was so sure that I did something wrong. Then there it was, right at the bottom of the nighttime doubler description, a little note just for me. “Note: the nighttime doubler is made to be used with our daytime insert snapped on top. Only the daytime insert has a top layer of soft moisture-wicking fleece to keep baby's skin dry”. Yup, that was it. I never put the daytime insert on as well. Oops! I was so relived that I found the solution and that it was my mistake that my son woke up soaked and not the diaper.

I was thoroughly impressed with how well Buttons Diapers did during the daytime test. After 3 hours I took the diaper off and the top fleece layer was completely dry. It didn’t even feel like my son had peed. I touched the micro fiber layer just to make sure that it was wet and it was.

Although the Buttons Diapers passed the daytime test it did not pass the second nighttime test. I was given one small daytime insert and one large nighttime insert. The nighttime insert was too big for my little one and stuck out of the diaper. Since the insert was sticking out it caused the moisture to wick out of the top getting my son’s undershirt, onesie, and sleepsack wet. There you go. The problem is that the insert cannot come in contact with you’re baby’s clothing.

Can you see the insert poking out?

After sharing my results with Amy, one of the owners of Buttons Diapers, she was able to provide me with a suggestion on how to fix the nighttime leaking (even with the large insert). Her suggestion was to make the rise snaps one setting larger to allow both inserts to fit inside the cover without poking out. I listened to her suggestion and found that making the rise snaps one setting larger was still not enough for the large insert to font in. I decided to try unsnapping them all together. The inserts now fit in perfectly. With my son only being 7 months old the diaper now didn't fit him as snug. However, I still decided to test it out at night anyways. I guess third times a charm. My son was in the diaper for about 9 hours and woke up dry for once. I for once did not have to change his onesie, pyjamas, and sleep sack at 5 am in the morning. What a relief!

Cloth diapering has honestly been a very frustrating experience for my husband and I with the constant leaks everywhere. Finding a cloth diaper that works for my son is such a great feeling. I can't wait to add more Buttons Diapers to my stash and start raving to everyone about how amazing cloth diapering is again.

Thank you to Amy and Scott for making such a great diaper!
