5 Ways to Treat Clogged Milk Ducts

Clogged milk ducts are no fun! When your mammary duct is clogged, milk is unable to flow through that particular duct leading to swelling and discomfort. It is extremely important to treat clogged ducts ASAP. You do not want it to lead to mastitis.

Here are some of things I did to help unclog my mammary duct:
  1. I took multiple hot showers and let the hot water run down on my breast while massaging into the clogged area and pushing down towards the nipple
  2. After the hot water massage I applied cold raw cabbage leaves over my breast
  3. I tried to get as much rest as possible (great opportunity for the hubby to take care of you)
  4. To boost my immunity to help reduce my risks of developing mastitis I drank hot lemon and honey water
  5. Most importantly I continued to breastfeed by only offering the sore breast to my son. It is also recommend that your baby's bottom lip is as close to the clogged duct as possible. I would pump the other breast when it was too engorged.

Following these 5 steps helped me unclog the duct within a day or two. Please seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen and/or you develop a fever.

Have you struggled with a blocked milk duct before? How did you treat it?
