Buttons Diapers Review

When my husband and I first bought and started using cloth diapers with our son we raved to everyone about how amazing cloth diapering is. We were so excited to start cloth diapering that we bought 24 of one brand from a baby show before baby arrived. Our excitement didn’t last too long though. It didn’t take long for us to start feeling very frustrated and annoyed with diaper leaks everywhere.

I quickly contacted the cloth diaper company and explained the leaking situation to them and they simply told me that it was my HE machine causing the leaking and not the diaper itself. After trying various different wash routines my husband and I ended up buying a few more diapers from other companies to test out and believe it or not these brands did not leak. Although, we love the new brands they are very costly. We cannot justify buying a whole new supply of diapers that are going to break the bank – again. So our search continues…

Recently, I came across a new budget friendly diaper brand, Buttons Diapers. The best thing about my awesome find was that Buttons Diapers was kind enough to give me a cloth diaper to test out on my little one in exchange for my constructive feedback.

I was extremely excited to receive this diaper in the mail that I quickly opened the package, prepped the diaper and put it on my little one as quick as possible. I decided to test the diaper out first at night along with the nighttime doubler insert that was sent.

After 10 hours of sleeping my son woke up soaked. Yup, completely soaked! I was so sure that for once he was going to wake up dry. I began to question why he had leaked through the diaper. Did I use the right insert? Did I prep the inserts properly? Was it because the large insert was too big and sticking out of the diaper? I quickly re-washed the insert and diaper and thought I’d test out the small daytime insert. I still had hope for this diaper. I really wanted this diaper to work. I love the no stuff easy strap and go approach. The insert just snaps right onto the cover. Did I mention how soft these inserts are? I wish they made adult underwear this soft.

As my son was playing around in his new Buttons Diaper I sat down to think about how I was going to write a review on a diaper that possibly didn’t work for me. I decided to double check the website again because I was so sure that I did something wrong. Then there it was, right at the bottom of the nighttime doubler description, a little note just for me. “Note: the nighttime doubler is made to be used with our daytime insert snapped on top. Only the daytime insert has a top layer of soft moisture-wicking fleece to keep baby's skin dry”. Yup, that was it. I never put the daytime insert on as well. Oops! I was so relived that I found the solution and that it was my mistake that my son woke up soaked and not the diaper.

I was thoroughly impressed with how well Buttons Diapers did during the daytime test. After 3 hours I took the diaper off and the top fleece layer was completely dry. It didn’t even feel like my son had peed. I touched the micro fiber layer just to make sure that it was wet and it was.

Although the Buttons Diapers passed the daytime test it did not pass the second nighttime test. I was given one small daytime insert and one large nighttime insert. The nighttime insert was too big for my little one and stuck out of the diaper. Since the insert was sticking out it caused the moisture to wick out of the top getting my son’s undershirt, onesie, and sleepsack wet. There you go. The problem is that the insert cannot come in contact with you’re baby’s clothing.

Can you see the insert poking out?

After sharing my results with Amy, one of the owners of Buttons Diapers, she was able to provide me with a suggestion on how to fix the nighttime leaking (even with the large insert). Her suggestion was to make the rise snaps one setting larger to allow both inserts to fit inside the cover without poking out. I listened to her suggestion and found that making the rise snaps one setting larger was still not enough for the large insert to font in. I decided to try unsnapping them all together. The inserts now fit in perfectly. With my son only being 7 months old the diaper now didn't fit him as snug. However, I still decided to test it out at night anyways. I guess third times a charm. My son was in the diaper for about 9 hours and woke up dry for once. I for once did not have to change his onesie, pyjamas, and sleep sack at 5 am in the morning. What a relief!

Cloth diapering has honestly been a very frustrating experience for my husband and I with the constant leaks everywhere. Finding a cloth diaper that works for my son is such a great feeling. I can't wait to add more Buttons Diapers to my stash and start raving to everyone about how amazing cloth diapering is again.

Thank you to Amy and Scott for making such a great diaper!

  1. Thank you for reviewing our diapers for your readers! I'm glad the daytime insert is working great for your little one. I would suggest making the rise snaps one setting larger just at night to help fit both inserts inside without poking out. That's what I do with my kiddos, since the doubler + daytime take up more room inside the cover. I would love to hear your thoughts after you've tried this! :-) Thanks again!
